Our Approach

At St Herbert’s, we understand the need to develop children’s creativity in different ways. Through music, we feel that children

are able to express many different forms of creativity while also using and developing a range of musical skills.

We aim to provide children with a love of music through giving them many opportunities and experiences with music during

their time at St Herbert’s. These opportunities will be provided both in class, during weekly assemblies and worship, out of school

adventures and small group tuitions.

Throughout the year, children will be given the opportunity to learn how to sing, listen to and evaluate a wide range of music,

compose their own music and perform it as a way of establishing their self-confidence, creativity and sense of achievement.

We are meeting the requirements of the 2014 curriculum whilst matching the learning to the individuality of each child.

In year 1 children will be learning to:

  • Critically listen to and discuss music.
  • Explore and experiment with sounds on both pitched and un-pitched instruments.
  • Perform their own music.

Across the curriculum

At St Herbert’s, we encourage children to be musical across the whole of the curriculum. During the year, children will be listening to,

playing and performing a wide range of music from different traditions and periods of history. Children will also be using music across

many subjects to enhance their creative experiences.

Our Marvellous Music Moments
